Gingerbread house

Make Christmas complete with this cozy little house.

Ingredients:

For the house

  • 200 g white granulated sugar
  • 300 g brown sugar
  • 250 g butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon speculoos spices
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the caramel:

  • 200 g white granulated sugar

For the finish:

  • 150 g powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Optional: gelatin sheets
  • Optional: candies

Preparation:

Baking the house

Mix all ingredients together and knead into a single dough.

Roll the dough into 2 balls and let them rest in the fridge for at least an hour.

Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Roll out the dough and place it on a baking sheet.

Then use the cutter set to cut out the different shapes. Create doors and windows where you like.

You can make extra circles and stars for decoration.

Bake the house parts for 10 to 15 minutes in the oven.

The pieces may have spread a bit in the oven. You can fix this by recutting the shapes as soon as they come out of the oven. Do not wait too long for this, otherwise the cookie will become too hard.

Let the cookies cool down completely before moving on to the next step.

Gluing the house together.

Now comes a part where it is important to stay focused. Make sure everything is ready to glue the house together efficiently. The caramel will set quickly, so the intention is to work fast.

Do you want windows in the house? You can do this by cutting gelatin sheets and gluing them to the inside of the house. It is best to do this before attaching all the parts together.

Heat the sugar over high heat. As soon as the sugar turns brown, keep the caramel warm over low heat. Now you can start gluing the house together. Dip the 2 sides you want to join into the caramel bath and press them together. Hold them briefly and then set them upright. Continue like this until you have attached everything.

Decorating the house.

Now comes the best part: decorating the house. Let your imagination run wild.

Make the fondant by mixing about 100g of powdered sugar with a little bit of water. The fondant should not be too runny, but not too thin either. You can now apply the fondant to the house like snow.

Further decorate the house with Smarties, candies, ...

Looking for a nice finishing touch? Sprinkle some decorative powder over the house like real fresh snow.

Enjoy!
